In search of home

My name is Tom Ottway and I am researching the personal stories behind The Story of Home. I work at the University of Sussex in the School of Media, Film and Music.

I live in Brighton & Hove, UK, and as someone who came to the city to settle, I'm interested in talking to others who have a connection with or feel at home (or don't feel at home) here in some way.

I'm also interviewing people around the UK about what it means to:

-be a resident somewhere
-feel at home/ not at home somewhere

I'm very much inspired by Humans of New York  http://www.humansofnewyork.com/  I want to connect with people who I share this city, country and world with.

I'm a composer and podcaster and I'm also looking to work with people to help tell their stories; to enable us to listen better to one another and be tolerant of and more knowledgeable about where we all come from. It's a lofty aim but I'm convinced it's a good one. Already I have had the pleasure of meeting amazing people and hearing their often astonishing stories of home. I'll share them here with you, and would love to hear your response, whether you live in Brighton or not.

If you are interested in sharing your story of home, and adding to the bank of stories, then please contact me at: t.ottway@sussex.ac.uk

The story of home is nothing less than our story in getting here to this point. The question, just as big, however, is where are we going as a society?

I hope this blog and research is of interest to you, and moves the debate along regarding 'Who belongs? Who is welcome/ who is not?'
